Trend in life expectancy by National Statistics Socioeconomic Classification
Dataset
Documentation
Description:
A statistical bulletin that presents estimates of life expectancy (at birth and at age 65) broken down by personal socioeconomic position using the National Statistics Socio-economic Classification (NS-SEC). The estimates are derived from the ONS Longitudinal Study (a 1% linked sample of England & Wales) and are presented for pooled five-year periods (here, 1982–86 through 2012–16) to ensure statistical precision. The bulletin includes summary findings (for example, gaps in life expectancy between higher managerial/professional groups and routine occupations), inequality measures such as the Slope Index of Inequality (SII), and tables/datasets with life expectancy estimates, age-specific mortality rates and confidence intervals.
