Patient-Led Assessments of the Care Environment
Dataset
Documentation
Description:
The Patient-Led Assessments of the Care Environment (PLACE) dataset provides annual, patient-led evaluations of the non-clinical aspects of NHS-funded inpatient care settings in England. It measures how well healthcare environments support patient privacy, dignity, cleanliness, food and hydration, and suitability for people with dementia or disabilities.
Data are collected through on-site assessments conducted by teams made up of at least 50% patient assessors (the remaining members are NHS staff). Each participating organisation submits results via the NHS Estates and Facilities data collection system, following national PLACE guidance and standardised scoring criteria.
The dataset covers hospitals, mental health units, community hospitals, hospices, and independent providers that deliver NHS-funded care across England. The results are published annually by NHS England to promote transparency, benchmarking, and local quality improvement in the care environment.
